FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is ROID?
ROID is an Android Mail app designed specifically to access Yahoo Mail accounts ending in @yahoo.com, @ymail.com, and @rocketmail.com. It automatically notifies you when you have new email, and enables you to access all your Yahoo Mail folders. You can of course send email too. ROID syncs your changes by accessing the Yahoo Mail server that supports synchronization. If you use Wi-Fi, you may know that Yahoo blocks access to this server over Wi-Fi. ROID overcomes this block by temporarily switching your phone to your mobile network, checking mail, and then switching back. In this way, ROID ensures that you never miss a message. ROID also works fine if you don't use Wi-Fi. ROID is Android Mail that's strong enough for Yahoo.

What Android OS versions does ROID support?
ROID will work on phones with Android OS 1.5 and higher. On many phones you can find your OS version by going to Settings > About Phone > Firmware Version.

What type of Yahoo Mail accounts does ROID work with?
ROID works with Yahoo Mail accounts ending in @yahoo.com, @ymail.com, and @rocketmail.com. It works with both free Yahoo Mail accounts and Yahoo Mail Plus accounts. It does not currently support yahoo country domain accounts like @yahoo.co.uk, @yahoo.fr, etc.

If I am having a problem downloading ROID, what should I do?
Most download issues are encountered when downloading the paid version of ROID.
(1) Make sure you entered your credit card information correctly in the Android Market.
(2) Call your credit card issuer to make sure they are not blocking the payment.
(3) If you have Google Talk, log in to Google Talk before going into the Android Market. A bug in Google Talk may prevent you from downloading paid apps in the Android market if you are not also logged in to Google Talk.
(4) In the Android Market do a search for ROID, and then download the free, ad-supported version of ROID.

How do I get past the first page in ROID that asks questions about me?
Answer all the questions on that page and then scroll to the bottom and select Continue.

Why does ROID require information about me?
ROID needs this information to make sure that any offers or ads provided in current or future versions of ROID are as relevant and beneficial as possible. This information is required in free and paid versions of ROID, even though the current paid version does not contain ads.

What should I do if ROID won't connect to my Yahoo Mail account?
(1) If you downloaded ROID prior to February 19th, 2011, then you need to update to the latest version. If you don't get the update automatically on your phone, you may need to uninstall and re-download ROID from the Android Market (if you paid for ROID, you will NOT need to pay again).
(2) Make sure you have typed your yahoo email address and password exactly correct in ROID. Capitalization matters in the password. Make sure you don't use zero instead of o, or vice versa. Make sure you don't use dashes instead of underscores, or vice versa. To double check accuracy, go to the Yahoo Mail web site and login by typing your Yahoo email address and password (logout if you are already logged-in).

Can I move messages between folders?
This feature is not yet supported.

How do I empty the trash folder?
Yahoo often ignores empty trash requests from ROID. To empty trash, login to the Yahoo Mail Web Site.

How do I address messages using my phone address book?
Just start typing a name in the TO, CC, or BCC fields and ROID should attempt to auto-complete using your phone address book.

How do I get contacts from my Yahoo address book?
Currently, the only way to get your Yahoo Mail Address Book out of Yahoo and into your Android phone address book is to (1) login to Yahoo with your computer and export your Yahoo address book into a csv file and save it on your desktop, (2) login to your Gmail account on your computer and import the CSV file into your Gmail address book, (3) make sure you have the Gmail app on your phone configured to access your Gmail account and automatically sync. If you do, your contacts will show up when it syncs, usually within a few minutes.

Why does ROID switch me from Wi-Fi to the mobile network?
ROID is able to provide synchronization with your Yahoo Mail account by accessing a Yahoo mail server that supports synchronization. Unfortunately, Yahoo blocks access to this server from all networks other than traditional cell phone networks. So, ROID overcomes this rather unfriendly Yahoo policy by switching to your mobile network when it checks email. ROID automatically switches back to your Wi-Fi network (if you use one) when it is done. For best results, exit ROID using the Back button on your phone.

How do I make ROID switch from Wi-Fi to the mobile network less often?
If you find this temporary switch disruptive, then reduce your Email Check Frequency. To do this, go to your ROID inbox, then select the Menu Key, then Account Settings, then Email Check Frequency. Choose a less frequent Email Check Frequency.

What should I do when ROID does not seem to synchronize changes?
If you are in ROID and you see messages that you previously deleted in Yahoo on your computer, or are having other synchronization issues, use your phone's Back button to back all the way out of ROID, then start ROID and go back in. Alternatively, if you are in the ROID inbox or folders screen, then select your phone's Menu button and then Refresh. Both of these approaches should cause ROID to sync with the Yahoo mail server.

What should I do if ROID stops automatically getting my email?
Restart your phone. The ROID service that checks for new email will get turned off by Android when you upgrade ROID; the only way to turn it back on is to restart your phone. If that does not resolve the problem, uninstall ROID and then re-download it from the Android Market (if you paid for ROID, you will NOT need to pay again).

What should I do if I start getting a connection error?
(1) If you downloaded ROID prior to February 19th, 2011, then you need to update to the latest version. If you don't get the update automatically on your phone, you may need to uninstall and re-download ROID from the Android Market (if you paid for ROID, you will NOT need to pay again).
(2) Go into your ROID settings and make sure it has your current Yahoo email address and password. Make any necessary corrections and try again.
(3) Restart your phone, and try again.
(4) Go to an area with a good mobile signal strength and try again.
(5) Turn your phone off, remove the battery, count to fifteen, insert the battery, start, and try again.
(6) If your carrier offers you a way to update your phone's roaming settings, then do that. For example, on a Verizon Wireless phone call *228 and select option 2.
(7) Try creating a new free yahoo.com email account and using it with ROID. Sometimes connection problems are due to issues with the Yahoo mail server; these issues seem to occur more often with Yahoo Mail Plus accounts and accounts using foreign languages.
(8) Uninstall ROID and then re-download it from the Android Market (if you paid for ROID, you will NOT need to pay again).
(9) Send a detailed bug report to support@roidmail.com, and include your phone make, model, carrier, OS version, Yahoo email address, Yahoo password (you can always change it later), and tell us in what situations you get the connection error and in what situations you don't.

What if ROID just stops working?
(1) Restart your phone. You must restart your phone after installing a ROID upgrade or ROID will stop alerting you to new messages.
(2) Uninstall ROID and then re-download it from the Android Market (if you paid for ROID, you will NOT need to pay again).

What should I do if an upgrade keeps crashing my phone?
Some Android phones seem to have a flaw that makes them crash when trying to install a ROID upgrade. The solution is to uninstall ROID, and then re-download it from the Android Market (if you paid for ROID, you will NOT need to pay again). The newly downloaded version will be the newest version.

What should I do if the free version of ROID keeps giving a Force Close error?
The free version of ROID will give a Force Close error if you have Location disabled in your phone settings. Free ROID needs your location to maximize the relevancy of its ads for you. The solution is to enable Location (wireless network or GPS based). If you don't want to, consider purchasing the paid version of ROID that has no ads. To find the paid version of ROID, go to the Android Market and use the search feature to search for "ROID".
